Jan-Michael's practice focuses on the legally compliant implementation of digital and AI-based business models and the design of complex contracts. He is experienced in advising on data protection law in a corporate context and conducting investigations. He also frequently advises on transactions and carve-outs. Moreover, he enforces his clients' rights in and out of court.
He has particular industry expertise in the areas of automotive/smart mobility, software licensing/OSS, e-/m-commerce and technology transfer. His work has an international focus.
Leading business magazine Handelsblatt lists Jan-Michael Grages as one of “Germany's Best Lawyers” in the areas of IT law, data protection law and industrial property rights. He regularly publishes and lectures on issues in the aforementioned areas of law and is a member of the German Association of Law and Informatics. He speaks German, English and French.
He completed his studies in Hamburg and Aix-en-Provence. He received his doctorate from the Institute for Legal Informatics in Hannover on a copyright and licensing law topic (“Orphan Works”, Faculty Prize of Leibniz University). He completed his legal clerkship at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court and worked for Google and the broadcasting company Norddeutscher Rundfunk. He also worked for the German Mission to the United Nations in New York and for Freshfields.
